Virgin olive oil sits between extra virgin and lampante: mechanically extracted, acidity up to 2.0%, minor defects allowed. It is blended, bottled directly in some markets, or refined when prices converge with lampante. Its spread against the other grades is one of the cleanest signals of harvest quality: a wide discount to EVOO means good fruit was plentiful.

Frequently asked questions

What is virgin olive oil and how is it priced?

Virgin olive oil is mechanically extracted like extra virgin but allows acidity up to 2.0% and minor sensory defects. It trades between extra virgin and lampante; the price above is the current Spanish origin reference in EUR/kg.

What is the spread between virgin and extra virgin?

The virgin-to-EVOO discount widens when the harvest yields a high share of top-quality oil and narrows when defective oil is scarce. Compare both grades in the origins table above, or track the differential over time on our spreads page.

Who buys virgin olive oil in bulk?

Bottlers use virgin oil in blends and in markets where the grade is sold directly; refiners buy it when its price approaches lampante. Its demand is more price-elastic than EVOO's, which makes the grade spread a useful market signal.

Where does this price come from?

From official origin sources (the EC weekly prints and Spanish market data), held flat between publications. The methodology page documents the sources and revision policy.
