Lampante olive oil is the refining grade: acidity above 2.0%, destined for neutralisation and deodorisation rather than direct consumption. It anchors the bottom of the olive oil price structure. Refined-oil economics set its floor, and the premiums of virgin and extra virgin are measured against it. Its price tracks overall supply conditions more closely than quality premiums.

Frequently asked questions

What is lampante olive oil?

Lampante is virgin olive oil with acidity above 2.0% or significant defects, not fit for direct consumption. It is sold to refineries, which neutralise and deodorise it into refined olive oil, later blended with virgin oil for the 'olive oil' retail category.

Why does the lampante price matter?

Lampante is the floor of the olive oil price structure: refined-oil economics anchor it, and every other grade trades at a premium above it. When the EVOO-to-lampante spread compresses, it signals scarce top-quality oil; when it widens, quality is plentiful.

Who buys lampante?

Refiners, largely in Spain and Italy, and the traders supplying them. Volumes are substantial in high-yield, low-quality campaigns and shrink when the harvest is sound, which makes lampante availability itself a supply signal.

How is this price sourced?

From official Spanish origin data (the EC weekly prints), quoted in EUR per kilogram at origin and held flat between publications. See the methodology page for sources and the revision policy.
