Portugal Olive Oil Market: Production & Export Overview 2026

March 13, 2026

Portugal Olive Oil Market 2026

Portugal occupies a distinctive position in the global olive oil landscape: a mid-size producer with a strong tradition of quality, a rapidly growing intensive sector, and increasing international recognition for premium DOP-certified oils.

Production Landscape

Total Portuguese production in 2025/26 is estimated at 120,000–140,000 tonnes, up from a difficult 2024/25 season. The country has two very distinct production systems operating in parallel: the modern, large-scale intensive and super-intensive plantations of the Alentejo, and the traditional, small-scale orchards of Trás-os-Montes, Beira Interior, and other northern regions.

Alentejo: The Growth Engine

The Alentejo has been transformed over the past two decades by large-scale investment in intensive olive cultivation. Flat terrain, reliable irrigation from the Alqueva reservoir, and favourable growing conditions have made the Alentejo Portugal's most productive region, accounting for approximately 60–65% of national output.

Trás-os-Montes: Quality and Tradition

Trás-os-Montes, in northeastern Portugal, produces smaller volumes but is home to some of the country's most distinctive and highly regarded olive oils. The region's DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) certification — Azeite de Trás-os-Montes DOP — guarantees geographical origin and production standards. Key varieties include Cobrançosa, Madural, Verdeal Transmontana, and Cordovil.

The rugged landscape and traditional production methods result in oils with notable aromatic complexity. Polyphenol levels tend to be high, particularly from early-harvest oils.

Export Growth

Portugal has been steadily increasing olive oil exports, with Brazil, France, the UK, and Germany as key markets. Portuguese olive oil is gaining traction as buyers seek alternatives to Spanish and Italian oil, both for diversity and for the quality-price ratio of DOP-certified products.

Price Benchmarks

Standard EVOO at lagar in Alentejo: €4-€4.5/kg. P. Trás-os-Montes: €4.5-€5.5/kg at origin.
